Northern Lower michigan is covered by an ancient sand dune. Up to 165ft of sand on bedrock. With glacial deposits on top of that. The rocks are still here, but the gold dug in deep. Large nuggets were found in the Grand River.

Why bother? With the laws Michigan has, you can only harvest one troy ounce a year, and can't use certain equipment that makes it easy to process the material like sluices.

I live in Michigan and never heard of anyone finding gold. I can't believe all the people on here claiming to find gold in Michigan. FOOLS GOLD Maybe.

Geologically, shelter bay is the dividing line in the U.P and everything west of that point is bedrock/Precambrian rock at the surface or close to it as opposed to the eastern U.P which is compromised of a thick sandstone layer. The lower peninsula is unique in that it has several miles thick glacial till plus a several miles thick layer of deposits that were deposited in a major depression when the earth was covered in water. So with all that said is why you'll do better prospecting in the western U.P because more minerals are at the surface. This isn't to say you can't find gold in the lower or eastern U.P but, that gold would be deposited by the glaciers. **So Hemlock MI is the geographical center of MI, bedrock is 18 miles down at that point and for this reason a major earthquake in MI is almost non existent BUT, if it does happen we are in trouble!

I can make more money collecting pop bottles than I can panning for gold in Washington. It costs me 10 times as much to get "there and back" than the value of any gold I've found.

The first gold rush in the Carolina’s was bigger than the California gold rush. The California rush did more to displace population and the methods used there were able to extract more gold.

also. streams. almost every mountain everywhere has a runoff or active stream that has moved the gold into it if you know where and how to look for these spots.

im part of a greater portland maine mineral club and was just talking to an elder member tonightabout this subject. esp about silver as i have land in southwestern maine and wanted to know if i could find precious metals and the gentleman i was talking about said be very very careful with these types of mines in maine and nh due to the fact people would start up these mines and sell stock options and alot of them either had very small amounts or the samples were salted. so beware of researching old mines in new england for that reason.

I live on the peninsula and I’m just getting in prospecting. From what I’ve found doesn’t the gold tend to settle in at the bottom of mountains at the ravine? I’m trying to understand more and more. I know pyrite and quartz are good indicators of gold near by. Are there other minerals that help indicate?

I have two metal sluice boxes. From ysrd sales. A 10" Jobe w/legs. Could be turned into a highbanker, but buying a header/crash box is costly. I need a cheap redneck solution. The 2" portable pump I got with it is heavy and noisy. There's the plain header grizzly, the highbanker dredge combo, and ones with a garden hose sprayer addition. Abd I think someone combined all those elements. And someone suggested using magnets to trap the fine gold near the bottom of the sluice. I've never built any of that yet, and what I've watch of builds have been less than ideal, wanting for clarification or better demonstration. I also have a 6" Garrett brand(?) with the standard riffle setup. Im wondering if it maybe needs a different setup for low flow cricks and fine gold testing i could probably add the EZ-sluice under the bottom as an extension. I could use some ideas, resources, better videos, etc. Also, what would you recommend for a nice quiet electric water pump for the 10" sluice and one for the 6" sluice?
